Few streets capture California style as well as Melrose Avenue. A West Hollywood staple, this must see strip extends 16 km across and runs north of Beverly Boulevard to south of Santa Monica Boulevard. However it is the famed west end that is worth the journey. Also known as the Melrose District, this shopping area expands approximately 5 km from Fairfax Avenue to La Brea Avenue. Once there you’ll find a variety of moderate to luxury boutiques, restaurants, and galleries. Here’s what I suggest: try a bottle of Riesling from Mel & Rose; choose a few textiles from Serena & Lily; restock on classics from Claire V; and finally finish with an appetizing plate from Taste.
Travelling with the little ones? Park close by, then traverse the west end on foot. It’s far more convenient to explore points of interest with a stroller in tow, instead of hauling a car seat to and fro, with the aggravation of constantly entering and exiting the vehicle. Plus you’ll never repeat a route, as there are sights to take in on both sides of the road. Additionally, I highly recommend carrying juice boxes and water bottles to keep everyone hydrated. Melrose Avenue is a major thoroughfare, and surroundings can reach unusually high temperatures. We made our sojourn in June, and already, a few days touched above 30°C.
If the sounds and sights are overwhelming for your little one, pop into a nearby store for some cooling air, or reroute to a quieter street. Waring Avenue, which runs immediately parallel to Melrose, is much quieter than its neighbour. Located in the heart of West Hollywood, you’ll find the residential surroundings charming, with an eclectic mix of modern and Spanish style architecture. Just the ticket to get that daily nap started.

Tips & Perks
Street Parking
Price – moderate to luxury
Atmosphere – Not kid friendly. Busy street and loud noises. Recommend strolling in nearby residential neighbourhood if exposure becomes excessive.
Restaurants are the best bet for restroom access. Luckily there are quite a few on this street.
Age appropriate from 0 years
Stroller access – limited the sidewalk access tends to vary. At some points it becomes narrower than others. Though not an impossibility on this busy street, a smaller stroller is recommended as it does take some maneuvering with oncoming pedestrians and cyclists.
