Started by two sisters in 1991, Moko Market Café & Store is a concept space that combines bohemian interior design with local café culture. Currently expanded to two locations, the original store is a creative hodgepodge of vintage pieces, South Asian furniture, and decor items perfect for hosting a fete, or putting the finishing touches on any personal space. Even the store surroundings resonate with this eclectic theme. The flagship sits in a former industrial building based in Punavuori, one of Helsinki’s trendiest neighbourhoods. At the café, eager shoppers can enjoy homemade as well organic options in well-appointed spaces throughout the store. Affectionately dubbed ‘Moko’, this store is one of my favourite spaces in Helsinki. It works on so many levels.
For dilettantes, it offers a wonderful ‘tasting menu’ with a well thought out selection of styles and influences to get started on a first home; and for connoisseurs it’s an easy resource to replenish low supplies.
Best of all Moko is parent friendly. The entrance is wide enough to fit a double stroller, with ramp access to the lower level within its widely spread interior. In addition to the general café seating, there are several alcoves available – intimate spots perfect to soothe a little one, or to enjoy a morning latte while temperate music plays overhead. And while there isn’t too much space for your toddler to runabout, there is a wooden hut that she can explore while you catch up on some personal time. All in all the makings of a good day.
