When it comes to casual dining experiences, The Cock is the ultimate triple threat. Though its description reads this space as an eatery, rotisserie, and bar, in reality it is the restaurant’s unbeatable location, fantastic ambience, and terrific food that distinguishes it as a cut above the rest. This winning combination has earned the establishment a steady following of Stadi locals taking in the easy vibe of this Nordic brasserie. But don’t take my word for it, take the journey yourself.
Nestled behind Pohjoisesplanadi one of Helsinki’s most frequented streets, The Cock’s external surroundings are surprisingly quiet and spacious. The restaurant is located on the Kasarmikatu Square, and is engulfed by Finnish art nouveau facades, that contrast nicely with the relaxed nature of passersby.
Like so many spaces in Helsinki, The Cock is kid friendly. Come there for an early lunch and enjoy the view from any of the floor to ceiling windows. If the weather permits, then park your stroller and enjoy a coconut milk latte at the outdoor terrace, sweetly decorated with sorbet colours. Best of all, the fare is delicious. Sourcing according to season is standard practice, and substitutions are generally as tasty as the originals. There is extended seating in the lower level, however it is best experienced when there’s a babysitter for the little ones. There are steep steps, no stroller access, and usually opened on busy nights. On your way out take a peek at the artwork on staircase wall, done by controversial artist Jani Leinonen, a Finnish version of Warhol, perhaps? Either way you’ll leave with an experience.
