A current favourite space of mine in Helsinki is the store TIKAU. Located in the swanky sea-lined neighbourhood of Ullanlinna, TIKAU & Friends is a lifestyle boutique that spotlights sustainable brands with a focus on fair trade and hand made products. Available both online and in store, the selection is unpretentious and well thought through. The core offerings centre on home décor, featuring lovely woven baskets, and hand felted rugs; as well as children’s wear, accessories and toys. Best of all they stock one of my all-time favourite shoe brands Easy Peasy, as well as clothing from Oeuf, the American brand renowned for its clean-styled furniture and relaxed knits.
Tikau is a must visit, especially in the summer. Situated in Korkeavuorenkatu 9, it’s an easy ten-minute walk from Helsinki city centre, and the surroundings, which include Johanneksenkirkko (St. John’s church), Designmuseo, and turn of the century architecture are points of interest that guide you along. Feeling hungry after shopping? The street is littered with local flavours, from cafés to casual eats including the likes of Sis. Deli + Café, Hey Poké, Restaurant Juuri, and neighbourhood favourite Maxill. Prefer to eat at home? You can make a pit stop to Eiring – an amazing kitchenware resource, and pick up some organic meats from Anton & Anton. Best of all, the tram is close by (the 10 runs frequently), and Kaivopuisto park is a short distance away.

Price – moderate
Atmosphere – relaxed, kidswear, homeware
Age appropriate from 0 years
Stroller access – limited there are steps to enter the shop, and the door is slightly narrow. If you do manage to bring your stroller in, the space is quite tight, so moving around is not an option. Best if visited either without stroller, or with a partner so you can take in the surroundings, while they tend to your little one on the outside. In the summer there is a bench on the outside, so they can wait comfortably.
