For those unfamiliar with Finnish weather, there is an expression that sums up the season ‘Suomen kesä on lyhyt ja sisältää talven’, which roughly translates to ‘Finnish summer is short and includes a winter’. So you’d think after hailstorms and snow flurries in June, and a bone chillingly wet July that we have paid our dues, and that summer is simply late. Let’s reign in August, the last hurrah before the impending cold. No such luck. As I’m taking my daily stroll (more like a frenzied dash if I’m honest) to the local kindergarten, I look up; lo and behold the leaves are changing colour. In August.

Slowly, the intense greens that lined the landscape, are now tinged with golden and rust coloured hues, much like grey hair that lines the temples, and inevitably, will cover the entire landscape serving as an ever present reminder that we are approaching the autumn of our lives. So while I’ll continue to tuck in my grey hairs and refuse to acquiescence defeat, I’ll encourage you to get a head start on preparing your little ones for the cold temperatures to come.

Ver de Terre, or earthworm in French is a Danish brand. While it’s origins pull from many sources, its vision is clear: to create childrens’ outdoor clothing that are functional, durable, and safe using good design and high quality fabric. As such you’ll find that styles embrace a minimalist aesthetic. There are no laces or strings on hoods that are detachable, and the silhouette favours a streamlined yet generous cut, to ensure that your little ones can move around easily and comfortably in lightweight materials. If this sounds like a sound bite for the company, it’s only because I believe in their products passionately.

I discovered the brand by chance at a now defunct online store, and purchased two jackets on a whim. Now I can’t get enough. The wintersuits are easy to maneuver, and they are so toasty, that I seldom worry about the cold affecting my little ones. Best of all they are easy to care for being machine washable, and the vibrant colours are like jewels in the snow – this season’s navy is a favourite. Take care though; the styles are moderately priced, but worth the plunge, as the hardiness of the textiles allow for maximum usage.
